Harley Davidson a world famous maker of bikes has come a long way from the initial bikes that they made. Initially in the early twenties this company had started with a 1212 cc bike with a bore of 87.4 x101.6 mm. This initial bike was not so heavy and the weight of the bike increased in the later years and became 420 lb in 1929 from 366 lb in 1924. the bike became widely known because of its power and stability, comfort and reliability and the legend still goes on.

The “ F” head engine that was introduced in 1911 became a power workhorse until 1929 when Flathead engine was introduced.

The year 1912 saw further growth of the Harley Davidson Company . A six storey Factory building was constructed and in the same year the company started exporting the product to Japan. There were 200 dealers by that time in United States.

In 1914, the side car was introduced and in the same year the company joined motorcycle racing and soon dominated the sport event to be nicknamed as “Wrecking Crew”.

In 1915, saw the emergence of the three speed sliding gear transmission. In 1917, one third of the company’s product were supplied to the Military to fulfill their patriotic call and aid in the war effort. Ultimately, the total requirements of U.S. Military Services were fulfilled by Harley Davidson bikes. Ofcourse, by that time Harley Davidson become the biggest motorcycle factory in the world with about 2000 dealerships worldwide.

They even survived the depression due to world war. The V- twin was Harley’s specialty. In 1918, the single cylinder engine was discontinued. In 1928, the first twin cam engine and front wheel brakes were available with the Company and with that a speed over 85mph could be achieved. In 1932, the three wheel Servi car was introduced and became familiar commercial and police vehicle.

These days the biggest Harley appeared in 1340cc and became the trademark of the company. In 1936, Knuckelhead was introduced and this motorcycle was the world leader. With the introduction of Panhead in 1947, the Harley Davidson was at the forefront of the motorcycle Industry.

In 1940, again the company answered the patriotic call by supplying the US Military , their requirement. With various laurels in between , in 1949, the hydraulic front brake were introduced . In 1957, the Sportster model was introduced which was the fastest bike at that time in the market.

The beginning of 1970 , the revolution took place with the launching of Cruiser for Harley Davidson . Then onwards the success story of Harley Davidson is continuing with Awards in motorcycle racing, launching of FXS Low Rider and FLHS Electra Glide Sport.
